What cookies are

Cookies are small files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help a site work, remember your choices, and show how the site is being used. Some are set by us and some by companies whose services we use.

The same rules cover similar technologies, such as tags, pixels and local storage, and where we say "cookies" below we mean all of them.

Your choices

When you first visit our site we ask whether you accept cookies that are not strictly necessary. That banner is run by Cookiebot.

Strictly necessary cookies are always on, because the site cannot work without them. Everything else is set only if you agree, apart from one marketing cookie described below, which we are changing.

You can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings link on our site, and you can also block or delete cookies in your browser. Blocking the strictly necessary ones will stop parts of the site working.

The categories we use

Strictly necessary. Needed for the site to function and stay secure. This includes keeping you signed in after you use an email sign-in link, and protecting our forms from abuse. These do not need your consent.

Preferences. Remember choices you have made, so you do not have to make them again.

Statistics. Help us understand how visitors use the site, such as which pages are read and where people stop. This includes tools that record how a page was used, for example where a visitor scrolled or clicked, so we can see where the site is confusing. Set only with your consent.

Marketing. Used to measure our advertising, mainly to record which advert or search brought you to us so we know which campaigns are worth running. One of these is our own cookie, ts_attribution. It is currently set when you arrive, before you answer the banner, so we can tell which advert brought you to us. We are changing it so that it waits for your consent like everything else. You can clear it at any time using the cookie settings link on our site or through your browser. Every other marketing tag waits for your consent and does not load until you accept. We do not use cookies to build advertising profiles of you, and we do not allow other companies to use our site to advertise to you elsewhere.

Cookies set by Google through our tag manager, where you have consented to statistics or marketing, are listed in the cookie settings panel on our site.

That panel shows the full current list of cookies on this site, with who sets each one, what it is for and how long it lasts.

Third parties

Other than our consent banner, every tool below is loaded through Google Tag Manager and none of them run until you have accepted the relevant cookies. If you decline, they are never loaded and they receive nothing.

Managing cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you see which cookies have been set, delete them, and block them in future. The settings are under Privacy in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, and each browser's help pages explain the steps. Blocking cookies across all sites will affect how most websites behave, not just ours.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page from time to time. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
